The 2024 SFB Southwest Symposium will be hosted by the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, September 19-20, 2024.  

Symposia programs will include shared plenary speakers from the above locations with content accessible remotely across the country. Participants will include faculty and student populations of the respective host institutions, while also featuring regional presentations, speakers, and posters.

Trainee Workshop: Measuring Mechanics of Biomaterials
Graduate and postdoctoral trainees are invited to apply for a hands-on workshop focused on measuring the mechanics of biomaterials. We plan to focus on shear rheology of soft materials, including hydrogels, peptides, proteins, and colloids. In this 2 hour workshop, we will discuss basic principles, instrument use, and measurement techniques to avoid artifacts. Participation will be limited to 10 students to maximize learning. Travel fellowships of $300 will be available to defray the cost of traveling to the meeting a day early.

Trainee Workshop: Undergraduate Mentorship
Undergraduate trainees are invited to apply for a mentoring workshop to build community at the regional meeting. The group will discuss professional development topics, such as applying for graduate school, undergraduate research, and internship opportunities. There will also be ample time for informal networking with graduate or postdoctoral mentors. Participation will be limited to 10 undergraduates to maximize interaction. Travel fellowships of $300 will be available to defray the cost of traveling to the meeting.
